Don’t Call it a Comeback

A few days ago, I tweeted my frustration with certain COVID-19-related content on social media. It’s not that this information isn’t important — it is — but I’m not sure the world will be saved by yet another article about how to effectively work from home. Although I fully support all the groups sharing resources to navigate the current situation (which we are doing as well), I am eager to start thinking about what might be coming next.

The reality is, humans do better when we think about a better future. We are hard-wired for hope. So naturally, we are eager to look ahead and imagine what society will look like – how will we work, how will we live, how will we travel, and how will we socialize?

In the spirit of looking ahead, the IA leadership team recently recorded a conversation about what we’re seeing now and hope to see in the future. I’ve also shared some immediate, tactical thoughts on how you might renegotiate contracts through open and honest dialogue with your service providers.  But the piece that really caught my attention this week was from futurist Gerd Leonhard, who’s fascinating backcasting approach concluded that, “We are experiencing a global shift in consciousness as a result of this crisis.” It’s a challenging and worthy read.

The War for Skills: Preliminary Findings

On April 16, Mark Stelzner and Mary Faulkner presented their initial thoughts around the War for Skills during a webinar hosted by Human Resources Executive. The presentation focused on the disparate nature of how we think of skills, how we define them, and how difficult it will be to move from strict hierarchy to dynamic project teams. It was a fun conversation that lays the foundation for their next presentation on the topic to be delivered at HR Tech 2020: Winning the War for Skills.

  • Yes, we lamented the fact that we don’t need yet another article about working from home. But we thought this one from Inc.com was a good one because it focuses on the data around remote work and productivity – potentially paving the way for more flexible working conditions in organizations that haven’t typically allowed it.
  • Finally, while all those funny Covid-diet and wine-drinking memes might be entertaining to some of us, the reality is different for quite a few. This article from NBCNews.com highlights the challenges stay-at-home orders present to those struggling with addiction.
