If you’re like me, each day of this new world order requires a very intentional focus on empathy, listening, and caregiving. It’s easy to lose your sense of self and purpose, and equally easy to forget to truly engage with others while complying with social distancing. With remote work dominating the environment, spending the first few minutes of each encounter to connect on a human level is critically important.

We truly do hope that everyone is safe, healthy, and respected as the world of work – and indeed, the world – adapts to the rapidly changing situation around us. We at IA have been right there with you, ensuring the safety of our team, that everyone has needed supplies, and thinking through how we might best serve our community both personally and professionally. I’m so proud of our team for adjusting to this new normal while selflessly giving in any way they can, and that’s the true purpose of today’s newsletter.

Here is how we have shifted our focus:

  • Information shared online: The content we share will be primarily focused on resources for businesses and people from a wide variety of sources. This may include self-care tips, suggestions on how to work on virtual teams, who is hiring, and anything else that we hope you find useful. Follow us on TwitterFacebook and LinkedIn.

  • IA Resources and tools: We recognize that many leaders are being asked to move quickly with imperfect guidelines and rapidly changing regulations, so we want to get tools and resources into the hands of those who need them ASAP. Over the coming days, we will be posting a number of IA assets on our website, including educational material, tools to self-govern transformation (to avoid consulting fees given financial pressures), and best practices we offer to our clients every single day.

  • Office hours: The number one resource we have to offer you is time. We believe that human connection will carry us through this, and by listening and learning from each other, we will emerge stronger and more connected. To support this need, the IA team is setting aside “office hours” during which ANYONE can sign up for a 30 minute block to talk…about anything. Whether you need some free consulting, a sounding board, a pep talk or a sympathetic ear, we are here for you.

All of this information will be shared on a new section of our website – just go to the “Resources” tab for continually updated materials and to schedule time with your favorite IA resource.

I’ve witnessed a tremendous amount of grace and care these past few weeks, so please know that my team and I will do anything in our power to help you. Reach out. Connect. Engage. And most of all, please stay safe and healthy.

With love,
—Mark

Update on the War for Skills

On April 16, Mark Stelzner and Mary Faulkner will be presenting their preliminary findings during a webinar hosted by Human Resources Executive. Sharing initial output of their research, they will offer new insight into the market’s rapid evolution from the decades-old “War for Talent” to the growing and global “War for Skills”. Whether you manage people or technology, this session will provide a glimpse into a new era of work that demands a common taxonomy and foundational rethinking of, a) how work is produced and sustained; and b) how workers are assembled, rested, and reskilled.

Transformation is hard enough without the added stress of in-fighting between HR and IT.

Where You Can Find Us

IA is excited to be featured as speakers/presenters in some of the industry’s most thought-provoking events, including:

On Our Radar

Staying true to our desire to share helpful content, the following articles struck us as being useful:

  • The increased focus on keeping the workplace healthy and isolating those who may be sick has forced businesses to rethink their sick leave policies, as described in this article from Yahoo Money.
  • Workers come in all types – full-time regular employees aren’t the only ones impacted by the need for paid sick leave. Business Insider highlights the steps Google has taken to support contractors and temps in the workplace.
  • And to round out this month’s edition of On Our Radar, Slate Magazine talks about what is now a reality for many couples – working from home with your partner without killing them.
